I have been preaching for years that water of any type (ponds, pools, oceans, hot tubs, and even tap water) should be avoided when wearing contact lenses. Several kinds of dangerous bacteria and microbes, including pseudomonas and acanthamoeba, thrive in water which can increase the risk of infections to the cornea.
However, a lesser known fact about water and contact lenses is tonicity. Pond and lake water is hypotonic which causes a contact lens to increase in size. This will result in a tighter fitting contact lens which may be more difficult to remove which could then lead to a corneal abrasion.
On the other hand, ocean water is hypertonic. This will cause a lens to become smaller and fit more loosely!
